Healthy Food Options for Families in Need
The LSS Food Pantries serve people in need by offering a source of nourishment to families who are food insecure. With five storefront locations and multiple mobile pantry distributions, we’re enabling clients in 13 counties around Ohio to focus on other important aspects of life, like paying bills or finding employment. We do so by removing the immediate concern of hunger in a way that honors our clients’ dignity, offers hope and makes nutritious food more readily available to families and individuals who need it.
As part of the Lutheran Social Services’ Network of Hope, our mission is “to create a better world by serving people in need.” We live out our faith by providing nourishment and other resources to individuals and families in need.
At the LSS Food Pantries we offer the following services:
- Choice Food Pantry: We provide a choice food pantry model, empowering our client to select their own food.
- LSS Mobile Food Pantry and Produce Distributions: We bring shelf-stable groceries and/or fresh produce directly to residents in need in 13 Ohio counties.
- The Ohio Benefit Bank (OBB): We provide free access to public benefits and tax filing for low- and moderate-income families through the OBB, an internet-based income enhancement program.
- Stable Families Program: We help families at risk of homelessness overcome barriers and find permanent housing.
Remember the excitement of getting ready for the first day of school? Your parents probably helped you choose new clothes, new shoes or maybe a brand new haircut. And of course, new school supplies.
Now imagine you’re a kid whose parents can’t afford new clothes or shoes or school supplies. Getting ready to go back to school is not exciting, it is embarrassing. Maybe even scary because you’re not like other kids with their new clothes and supplies. For you, it will be a struggle to keep up with everyone else in class because you will not have the tools you need to learn.
Being nervous about whether you’ll fit in at school is normal. Fearing that you’ll be made fun of or will fall behind in class because your family can’t afford a calculator just shouldn’t happen. You can make sure it doesn’t by participating in the Mission Backpack School Supply Drive.
LSS WESTSIDE FOOD PANTRY
Valerie feels like she’s caught in a Catch-22. She’d like to get a telemarketing job, but she needs a car to get back and forth. She has received grants for an online school for social work, but now she needs money for a laptop. She’ll also lose her food stamps once she starts school.
These are the issues that bring Valerie to the LSS Westside Food Pantry. “This pantry is a nice one,” she said, adding that she only uses it when she has to. A giving person, Valerie said, “I always share what I have. It’s a pay it forward type of thing. I like to volunteer here, so I feel like I’m giving back.”
